Slow Morning Commute, School Closures as Winter Storm Saturn Advances in Golden Valley

The City of Golden Valley issued a snow emergency Tuesday morning.

The snow started falling at 7 p.m. Monday night and by Tuesday morning it was still coming down, causing slick roadways and school closings throughout the metro area.

Robbinsdale Area Schools are closed and Hopkins schools will start two hours late.

Plows in Golden Valley started working at 3 a.m. on Tuesday morning after the city issued a snow emergency. No parking is allowed on any street until plowing has been completed.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation said the driving conditions were difficult and weather forecasters predict that snow will continue to steadily fall through late morning.

The National Weather Service first issued a winter storm watch over the weekend and changed their alert to a warning Sunday afternoon. The storm is now classified as Winter Storm Saturn.

Metro Transit reported on Twitter that most buses were running ontime but had an average 2 minute delay.

On the Golden Valley Patch Facebook page Monday, Debbie Berman Wolfe said that various activities were canceled Monday afternoon.

All secondary schools are releasing 2:10 p.m. in order to ensure that the buses can arrive at the elementary schools for their normally scheduled departure times. All after-school student activities and late buses are cancelled this afternoon, including youth-enrichment classes. Road conditions may result in a delay to your child's normal home arrival. Kids and Co. will operate normal hours. Please plan your pickup time accordingly. Travel safely!
