Community Build Gives Kids a New Place to Play

This June, the community will partner with KaBOOM! and other organizations to construct a playground at Northport Elementary.

More than 600 children will soon have a new place to play. Volunteers from national non-profit organization KaBOOM!, The Toro Company, the Minnesota Vikings and community residents will gather Friday, June 3 to construct a playground at Northport Elementary.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for students and the community," said Robbinsdale Area Schools Marketing and Communications Program Director Tia Clasen.

The playground will be modeled after student drawings, created during an April Design Day event. Following construction, it will be open to both neighborhood residents and Northport attendees.

"We envision this playground becoming a community gathering spot," said KaBOOM! Communications Manager Mike Vietti.

According to statements on its website, KaBOOM! is an organization dedicated to eliminating America's play deficit. Since its inception 15 years ago, the non-profit has helped build nearly 2,000 playgrounds across the country.

"Part of what KaBOOM strives to do is dispel the notion that play is a luxury. All sorts of problems can be solved on the playground," said Vietti, citing childhood obesity.

A majority of funding for the Northport project will be provided by The Toro Company and Minnesota Vikings. Interested volunteers are encouraged to contact Northport Elementary. All ages and abilities are welcome. The build will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1:45 p.m.
