Breck Girls Win Double-overtime Thriller

Mustangs beat South St. Paul on Saturday at Xcel Energy Center.

The girls hockey team beat South St. Paul 3-2 in double overtime on Saturday to take the state title. It was the first double-overtime championship game in state history, according to the Star Tribune.

Leah Schartzman scored at 10:55 in the second extra period to win the game for Breck. That was Schartzman's second goal of the game. Alexandra Wallin and Schartzman scored in the third period.

The Mustangs advanced to the state Class A hockey championship with an 8-4 win over Red Wing on Friday afternoon.

On Friday, Kate Schipper tied a state tournament record with four goals in the second period for the Mustangs (26-2-1). Schipper now has seven goals in two state tournament games, according to the Minnesota State High School League website.

Schipper and Milica McMillen were named to the all-tournament team.
