Benilde Teacher Fired for 'Inappropriate Communication' With Students

The teacher's external photography business may have been related to his firing.

A Benilde-St. Margaret's engineering teacher was fired for having "inappropriate communication" with students, according to a letter sent to parents Wednesday.

Jon Hickman, a professional photographer, was let go from the school on Wednesday.

Benilde President Dr. Bob Tift wrote in the email to parents that Hickman may have also had unapproved contact with students through the photography business he runs on the side.

"Any such activities such as senior photographs or artistic modeling photographs are not connected with or endorsed by BSM," he wrote.

Hickman's photography Facebook page shows pictures of young men and women, some of them Benilde students, some of them posing in bikinis.

It's unclear whether Hickman's photography business was the direct cause of his firing.

Tift told KSTP that firing Hickman was the hardest thing he'd ever had to do but that students and staff had understood his decision.

"Generally it's been pretty supportive and we're a community of faith so it's about keeping everybody in our prayers," he said.

The St. Louis Park police department has not immediately responded to a question about whether there is an active investigation as of this posting.
