What Makes a Good Street Sign?

With the city putting up new street signs, it's a good time for residents to consider what they want from signs.

Minnesota guidelines state that street signs should do five things:

  1. Fulfill a need,
  2. Command attention,
  3. Convey a clear meaning,
  4. Command respect (be warranted) and
  5. Allow appropriate time for a response.

Those may be pretty broad statements, but Golden Valley is installing new street name signs to comply with more-specific federal regulations on letter size and “retroreflectivity” to improve nighttime visibility. The signs will also have address block information to help people get around. They’ll have new crash-worthy posts. And they’ll be moved to improve visibility.

As a bonus, Public Works employees will install the signs in places that minimize their visibility from homes whenever possible.

Patch wants to know what you want from the signs drivers so-often take for granted. Is there a feature you just hate to have missing? Is there something they do that drives you mad? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.
