Survivors of the Interstate 35W bridge collapse have weighed in across the Twin Cities via Patch with their memories of that devastating day.
The bridge, which spans the Mississippi River near the University of Minnesota campus, collapsed at about 6 p.m. on Aug. 1, 2007. Thirteen people were killed and more than 100 were injured.
Rescue crews came from a nine-county area in Minnesota, and from St. Croix County in Wisconsin. United States Navy divers were deployed to help recover victims in the murky water.
A new bridge was erected and completed in September 2008. A memorial to the victims is located near the west side of the bridge, next to Gold Medal Park.
