Super America Issue Tabled By Planning Commission

Officials may discuss at their next meeting whether or not to allow the business to be open 24 hours.

Golden Valley Super America owners will have to wait a little longer to find out whether or not the business can be open around the clock.

On Monday the Planning Commission tabled Northern Tier Retail's request for a conditional use permit to operate 24 hours a day, every day. Northern Tier Retail recently purchased all Super America stores in Minnesota. The Golden Valley store at 1930 Douglas Drive now is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

The store’s previous owners made a similar request in 1996.

Owners say expanding the hours would better serve overnight shift workers at nearby Honeywell. Planners counter that workers could visit the store before or after their shifts and that there’s another 24-hour gas outlet just a half-mile to the east, at Trunk Highway 100 and Duluth Road. Planners are also concerned about the potential impact to neighboring property values, along with certain aesthetic issues.

Planning Commission members may discuss the issue again at the next meeting, on July 11.
