Rest Says She Gave Her Paycheck to PRISM

Senator says donation to food shelf is the best way to help people affected by the shutdown.

Sen. Ann Rest (DFL-District 45) announced Wednesday she gave her paycheck this month to People Responding In Social Ministry (PRISM) in Golden Valley.

"I decided that was the best way to have a direct impact on those hardest hit by the shutdown," Rest said in a news release.

Last week, Rest said she accepted this month's salary payment, but she would not request per diem payments for the remainder of the year. Per diem is a daily allowance for traveling for work or working away from home.

Also last week, PRISM officials said the food shelf is hurting because they are not receiving commodity shipments from the state, have fewer donations coming in and are serving more clients.

During the shutdown, state House members could forego their salaries one week at a time, but senators who declined a paycheck would lose an entire month's salary.
