Police and Firefighters Want to See You This Week

From open houses to street dancing, you'll want to check out what's in store for you and your family.

When Kelly Jo Siebert heard Golden Valley's fire stations and the police station would be holding open houses today, she didn't give it much thought.

"I just figured they'd have a tour of the place and maybe hand out flyers or something to kids," she says.  But then she drove by on Golden Valley Road.

"A sign out front said street dancers would be there," she says.  "So I checked out the city's website to find out what was up."

Siebert found a handful of activities this week at both the fire stations and the police station.  Tonight is the annual Public Safety Open House in Golden Valley.   Yes, you can tour the police station and any or all of the three fire stations, but you can also watch fire demonstrations, try on actual firefighter and police officer gear, enjoy hot dogs, win prizes, and more.

“You’ll get a chance to try on fire gear, put on a self-contained breathing apparatus, watch a live burn, take part in a auto extrication demo, and potentially climb our ladder trucks,” says Stephen Baker, fire education specialist, on the city's website. “Instead of telling you what it’s about, we’ll show you.”

Then, on Saturday, everyone is invited to the Fire Relief Association Street Dance (Sat, June 18, 4 pm to midnight) at the Chester Bird American Legion near Hwy 100 and Glenwood Ave. The free event is sponsored by the Golden Valley Fire Relief Association to celebrate its bond with the community and features music, refreshments, and fun for the entire family.

Siebert says her three kids don't have soccer practice or any other commitments for Wednesday or Saturday... until now.

"I put the Open House on the fridge calendar, and two of them made sure to circle the date a few times," she says.  "Saturday's street dance is another obvious no-brainer."

Check out the location near you to see what's in store from 6:00 - 8:00 tonight.

Don't forget to take pics of the family.  Post them to the Golden Valley Facebook page or email them to Patch and we'll post the Open House photos on Thursday.
