Minnesota Republicans Split over Delegation's Support of Ron Paul at RNC

A snap Red Twin Cities poll conducted by Patch in the wake of the to give the majority of its delegates to Ron Paul shows the state's leaders are divided by the Paul candidacy. 

UPDATE: 

While more than 80 percent–33 out of 40–of Minnesota's delegates are behind the Paul candidacy, only 55 percent of the 29 responses Patch received showed support for that decision. 

"He's not our endorsed candidate," said one of the pollsters. Nearly 21 percent disagreed strongly with the idea to give delegates to Ron Paul. About 14 percent were somewhat disagreeable to the notion. 

Lake Minnetonka Patch contributor and Excelsior Republican  —chair of the delegation–said she doesn't think Mitt Romney, named Tuesday as the GOP nominee, is a viable candidate.

“I don’t think Mitt Romney is a strong candidate,” she said. “He represents old ideas and what the party has stood for over the last couple of decades, which is not necessarily what the voters want.”  

Paul finished second to Rick Santorum in Minnestoa's caucuses, back in February. 

The poll continues to show a divide between the so-called Ron Paul Republicans and the traditional conservative base, which supports Romney. When asked if the delegation's decision showed a division within the Minnesota GOP, half said the statement was true. 

"The Republican Party is undergoing a change to become the party of limited government. This change will take time and won't be easy," one commenter said. "The Ron Paul movement is a beginning step." 

Republicans agreed, however, that Paul would not cause a problem for the Romney/Paul Ryan ticket at this GOP convention, which hits a fever pitch with Romney's acceptance speech on Thursday. About three-fourths of our experts said no, Ron Paul wouldn't be a distraction, and overwhelming majority thought it appropriate that Sen. Rand Paul, Ron's son who represents Kentucky, is a speaker during the RNC program. 

The Red Twin Cities Survey

Our surveys are not a scientific, random sample of any larger population, but rather an effort to listen to a group of influential local Republican activists, party leaders, candidates and elected officials in Minnesota.
