MINI Cooper Car Dealership Plans Continue to Move Forward in Golden Valley

The Golden Valley City Council held a public hearing and approved preliminary design plans for the new dealership Feb. 5.

The relocation of the only Mini Cooper Dealership in Minnesota to Golden Valley continues to move forward.

The Golden Valley City Council unanimously approved preliminary design plans for the construction of a new 29,500 square foot MINI Cooper dealership building on site of the former Oldsmobile building.

If the business receives final approval, the MINI Cooper dealership currently in Bloomington would be relocated to Golden Valley, one of nine in the United States.

A representative of the Penski Automotive Group told the council they estimated the building and relocated business could bring about 50 new jobs to the area, see about 1,000 vehicles a year resulting in $30 million in revenue.

Golden Valley is the “right place for us to be,” the representative told the council at the Feb. 5 meeting, stating the dealership would be a “great compliment to the area.”

Upon final approval by the Golden Valley City Council, the current 7.10-acre site would be consolidated from four lots down to three lots.

“The newly created Lot 1 will include the MINI Cooper site to the west, Lot 2 will include the former Saturn dealership site, and Lot 3 will include the Londo Boulevard Collision Center site,” according to a Feb. 5 Golden Valley City Council document.  “It is anticipated that the former Saturn dealership building will remain, but will ultimately be renovated to accommodate a new tenant. The Londo Boulevard Collision Center will remain on the site.”

The plans approved by the Golden Valley City Council did contain a few requests for changes such as a snow storage plan, which are anticipated to be addressed in the final approval stage.

With the preliminary design plan approval, the applicant (Lupient) has six month to submit a final plan for approval by the Golden Valley City Council.

“This is a great fit for the site,” one local business owner said during the public hearing, stating it is a “top notch operation.”
