Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Stenglein Steps Down

Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Stenglein, who represents Plymouth and Golden Valley, is taking on a new job.

Hennepin County Commissioner Mark Stenglien has announced he is stepping down after fifteen years in office. Stenglien has accepted a job as the president and CEO of the Minneapolis Downtown Council.

Stenglien, who serves District 2, which includes Plymouth and Golden Valley, says it is time for a change.

“The last fifteen years have been great,” he said. “Hennepin County is a great place to work, but this position isn’t meant to be lifelong. I feel like it is time for me to take on a new challenge.”

Stenglien feels his experience as county commissioner will serve him well in his new position.

“The Minneapolis Downtown Council has outlined a vision for the city and the planning skills I have utilized for the county will also be of great use to the council.”

Board Chair of the Minneapolis Downtown Council Elliot Jaffee says, "We are excited to have Mark Stenglein as the next leader for the Minneapolis Downtown Council. He is held in high regard for his accomplishments as a Hennepin County Commissioner, reflective of his ability to build productive relationships that truly address the needs of our community.”

While in office Stenglien says there are many projects he is proud of, including his work on the Lowry Avenue Bridge, light rail projects and the Twins stadium. However, Stenglien believes his work on the county budget is his biggest accomplishment.

“Dealing with the worst budget since the Great Depression wasn’t easy, but we came through it with no lay offs and I think that is really something to be proud of,” he said.

Stenglien is up for re-election this November and says a special election will not be necessary to fill his position.
