Hennepin County Approves $18.4M to Move Bottineau Forward

The money was needed to demonstrate a funding commitment to the Federal Transit Administration.

The Hennepin County Board, acting as the Hennepin County Regional Railroad Authority, approved $18.4 million on Tuesday to move Bottineau Light Rail Transit forward.

The county money was needed to demonstrate a funding commitment to the Federal Transit Administration (FTA), according to a county news release. The rest of the money is expected to come from the Counties Transit Improvement Board, which will vote on the issue in December.

Project development for Bottineau, formally called the Metro Blue Line extension, is scheduled to take two years and cost $46 million. The process involves completing the environmental review process and the municipal approval process and beginning engineering-related work.

The Metropolitan Council will lead the project development process—although the county and cities along the line will still be involved in station-area planning.

When complete, the 13-mile line will run from Minneapolis to Brooklyn Park—passing through Golden Valley, Robbinsdale and Crystal.
