Golden Valley City Council Will Consider Tobacco Ordinance Changes On Tuesday

Proposed new ordinance stiffens fines for businesses who violate the ordinance, such as by selling to minors.

Owners and employees of Golden Valley businesses in the future will pay stiffer penalties for violating the city's tobacco ordinance.

City Council members are expected to discuss proposed changes at their 6:30 p.m. Tuesday meeting.

Any business that is licensed to sell tobacco products and sells them to a person under age 18, for example, would pay up to $500 for the first violation, according to the new ordinance. The business' license would be suspended for not less than five days. Previously the fine was up to $150, according to the city.

The city is proposing increased fees and periods of license suspension for second and third violations, as well. With a fourth violation within two years, a business' license would be revoked for at least a year, according to the proposed ordinance.

Also during Tuesday's meeting, City Council members will consider another 12-month moratorium on development at the intersection of . City staff currently is studying a plan to create a corporate campus in the area. The city expects the study to be completed before the end of the 12 months.
