Nearby News: Investigation Continues Into Willow Creek Apartment Garage Fire in Plymouth

Two injured firefighters are out of the hospital after a late night fire kept crews busy Monday night in Plymouth.

The two firefighters injured during an underground garage fire at the Willow Creek Apts. Monday night are out of the hospital and doing all right, according to Plymouth Fire Chief Rich Kline.

"One had a knee injury that was treated and he was released from North Memorial and the other was treated for heat exhaustion and both are fine," Kline said.

The call for the fire came in around 10 p.m. Monday night for the apartment complex on the 200 block of Nathan Lane.

"It was a second alarm fire which brings in more resources," Kline said. "It was two cars on fire in the apartment complex's very large underground garage."

Typically a fire in an underground garage can extend into the adjoining apartment building, but fortunately that did not happen this time. More crews were needed to ventiliate the building, he said.

When the first officer arrived on the scene heavy smoke was issuing from the garage area.

"We knew it was a working fire, but we didn't know where it was coming from exactly," Kline said. "This was a confined area in a garage and it's very hard to ventiliate. Crews were operating in zero visibility. The fire was not easy to get to as it was in the middle of the garage."

Stretching hoses to get water to the source was a challenge for crews. With 400-foot long hoses it was a long process to get water on the fire, he said.

"Some smoke was issuing to upper floors via stairwells as well," Kline said. "The cause and origin are still under investigation, but it does not look like a suspicious fire at this time."

The investigation is being done by Plymouth Fire Department investigators.

The area was cleared around 1 a.m. and there were no civilians or others inside the garage during the fire, Kline said.
