Man Charged with Strangling Golden Valley Woman

Michael Wilder of Mounds View is accused of strangling his girlfriend, then not allowing her to leave his apartment for an hour after the assault.

A Mounds View man has been charged with strangling a Golden Valley woman, sending her to a hospital emergency room for treatment.

Michael Wilder, 46, is charged with domestic assault by strangulation, a felony with a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaint, signed by Golden Valley Police Officer David Kuhnly, police responded to the Hennepin County Medical Center emergency room on Aug. 26 on a report of a domestic assault.

The victim told police that Wilder, her boyfriend, had strangled her to the point where she was unable to breathe earlier in the day. She told officers that Wilder also pulled her hair and kept her from leaving his apartment for an hour after he strangled her.

As soon as Wilder stood up from the chair in which he was sitting, the victim told police, she left his apartment and took a bus to HCMC to be treated for her injuries.

Officers noted red marks and scratches all over the victim’s neck.

Wilder remains in the Hennepin County Jail on a $40,000 bond and on a Minnesota Department of Corrections hold. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled Sept. 18 in Hennepin County District Court.
