Man Arrested for Breaking Into Golden Valley Apartment

Police say Davontay Cortez-Rashonn Hollie kicked in the door of the apartment, apparently looking for a man who owed him money.

A Columbia Heights man has been charged with breaking into an apartment in Golden Valley, apparently intending to reclaim money that he thought the resident owed him.

Davontay Cortez-Rashonn Hollie, 20, is charged with first-degree burglary, a felony with a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $35,000 fine.

Golden Valley police were called to an apartment in the 1500 block of Douglas Drive just after 2 a.m. Dec. 29 to investigate a disturbance, according to the criminal complaint, signed by Golden Valley Police Officer David Kuhnly.

Officers met with the man who rents the apartment, identified in the complaint as C.P., and a woman who was there at the time of the burglary.

The woman said she was home alone when someone began to knock on the door. C.P. had told her not to open the door for anyone, so she ignored the knocking, but she heard someone in the hallway say, “That [expletive] is in there; he owes me money,” according to the complaint.

One of the people outside kicked in the door, and a man came into the bedroom where the woman was hiding. The man, later identified as Hollie, approached the woman and began to yell at her; she told police that she was frightened and tried to protect herself by pulling the bed covers over her body.

After Hollie left, C.P. returned, and they called police.

The woman told officers that she thought Hollie had been in another building in the apartment complex. Police spotted a man fitting the description running up the stairs of the other building and detained him; the woman identified Hollie as the man who had broken into her apartment.

Hollie remains in the Hennepin County Jail on an $8,000 bond. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled Jan. 31 in Hennepin County District Court.
