It's Going To Get Hot—Really Hot

With that in mind, Golden Valley has released some summer reminders.

When temperatures climb into the 90s and 100s, you're probably thinking about stocking up on ice cream, fans and tank tops.

The city of Golden Valley, however, wants you to think about crime. When the mercury rises, so does the crime rate, according to a city news release.

The Crime Prevention Unit of the has these tips to keep you and your family safe during these steamy days:

  • Close and lock the overhead garage door and service door when you are not in or near the garage.
  • Close and lock your windows at night and when you are not at home.
  • Do not leave bikes unattended while at the park or in the front yard. If it is stolen, be sure to have the model, make and serial number to report to the police. This will greatly improve the chances of recovering your bike.
  • Lock your front doors when working in the back yard (and vice versa).
  • If you are going on vacation, remember to have a neighbor check your house or call the Golden Valley Police Department at (763) 593-8079 and ask for a vacation house check.
  • Ladders should be kept inside the locked garage to prevent use in reaching high windows that might be left open.
  • Light up the outside of your house from dusk until dawn.
  • Walk or run with a friend, especially after dark.
  • Walk assertively and with confidence—be alert to your surrounding and the people near you.
  • Avoid using headphones while walking or bicycling—it's important to hear what is going on around you.
