Golden Valley Violent Crime Rates Decline

Both Golden Valley and Hennepin County saw a drop in violent crime rates in 2011.

Golden Valley police have tallied the numbers and say the city’s violent crime rate has dropped by 5.8 percent between 2010 and 2011.

“It’s always great to see these kinds of numbers decline,” Golden Valley Crime Analyst Joanne Paul said. “Our crime rates are the lowest they have been in more than decade.”

Golden Valley police responded to almost 20,000 calls for service last year. The city statistics show homicide, assault, arson, robbery and theft rates have all declined. (See the charts and graphs associated with this article for a closer look).

“Golden Valley has always had a low crime rate, and we attribute that to several factors including education, safety camps and working with other law enforcement to ensure community safety,” Paul said.

“Community members can help keep these numbers low by continuing to reach out to police if they see anything suspicious in their neighborhoods.”

This news comes on the heels of the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office announcing violent crime rates are down across the entire county. Last year was the fifth consecutive year that violent crime was reduced countywide. According to a press release, there was a 6 percent reduction in violent crime from 2010-2011.

“This is a remarkable achievement for the residents of Hennepin County and I believe the hard work and innovation of the Sheriff’s Office in partnership with all local law enforcement agencies contributed significantly to making communities safer,” said Hennepin County Sheriff Rich Stanek.

Since 2006, violent crime in Hennepin County has decreased by 38 percent and in Golden Valley violent crime has dropped by 31 percent.

The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office attributes this decrease in crime to improved technology, enhanced efforts to share information and expansion of partnerships among law enforcement agencies.
