Golden Valley Man Charged with Strangling Wife for Swearing

Police say Jamal Diin Omar grabbed his wife by the throat after she used a "curse word" and threatened to leave him.

A Golden Valley man has been charged with strangling his wife after she swore at him and threatened to leave him.

Jamal Diin Omar, 34, is charged with domestic assault by strangulation, a felony with a maximum penalty of three years in prison and a $5,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaint, signed by Golden Valley Police Detective Laura Gould, police were called to Methodist Hospital just after 2:30 a.m. Aug. 4 on a report of a domestic assault.

The victim told police that her husband, Omar, became upset after she used a “curse word.” When she told him she was leaving, Omar put both hands around her throat and squeezed, she told officers.

Omar then picked up the victim and threw her to the bed, causing her to smack her leg against the frame, she said. The woman told police that she was able to get away and drive herself to the hospital for treatment.

Police noted that the victim’s neck was visibly swollen after the assault.

Omar has been released from jail on a $10,000 bond. An omnibus hearing in his case is scheduled Sept. 12 in Hennepin County District Court.
