Golden Valley Man Charged with Robbing Man at Light-Rail Station

Police say Deshaun Marcel Martin grabbed the victim's wallet, then punched him in the head several times while he struggled with another man, trying to get the wallet back.

A Golden Valley man has been charged with snatching a wallet from a man at a Minneapolis light-rail station, then punching the victim in the head when he tried to get his property back.

Deshaun Marcel Martin, 20, is charged with aggravated first-degree robbery, a felony with a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $35,000 fine.

According to the criminal complaint, signed by Minneapolis Police Sgt. Walter Carlson, police were on routine patrol near the light-rail station on Oct. 21 when they saw a group of men surround another man.

One of the men, subsequently identified as Martin, pushed the victim, grabbed his wallet from his back pocket, then handed it to another man, who fled with it, according to the complaint.

The victim chased the man with his wallet and tackled him. While the two were struggling, Martin walked up and punched the victim in the head several times, leaving marks on his face, the complaint charges.

Officers approached and arrested Martin.

Martin remains in the Hennepin County Jail on a $100,000 bond. He made his first appearance on the charge on Oct. 24 in Hennepin County District Court.
