Firefighters Hone Skills in Controlled Burn

West Metro and Golden Valley Fire Departments were on the scene of a controlled burn in New Hope Saturday afternoon.

If you saw smoke shooting into the sky near Golden Valley on Saturday, don't worry, the destruction of a nearby apartment building was all planned.

The building on Virginia Ave. N. in New Hope was in flames as part of a controlled burn, and it didn't go unnoticed. Curious drivers jammed traffic near the burning apartment, but neighbors were well aware of the event.

Firefighters from both the Golden Valley Fire Department and the West Metro Fire-Rescue District honed their skills by intentionally setting fire to the building next to the Good Samaritan Society-Ambassador.

"West Metro firefighters don't get hands on training," said Marie Barta from the Good Samaritan Society-Ambassador. "Through this controlled burn, they get an opportunity to practice so that when there is a real fire, our community will stay safe."
