Obituary: Edward Hudoba of New Hope

He was a resident of Robbinsdale for more than 40 years.

Edward Hudoba of New Hope 

March 4, 1915 - Feb. 26, 2013

Ed was born on March 4, 1915, in Minneapolis, to Polish immigrants Louis & Mary Hudoba. He attended elementary school at Holy Cross parish and graduated from Edison High School in 1933. At age 20, he joined the CCCs, spending a year in northern Minnesota. He then worked days at the Waterman Waterbury Company while attended Dunwoody Industrial Institute where, in 1941, he completing studies in the sheet metal trade. While rehearsing a role for a play at the Northeast Neighborhood House (the "Nut" House), he met Julie Ann Majkrzak, who would become the love of his life. They were married on June 28, 1941.

Ed served in the U.S. Navy-Seabees in WWII and was honorably discharged in 1945. Upon returning to Minneapolis, he signed up for refresher courses at Dunwoody; soon after, he began teaching those classes. In 1947 he and Julie moved to Robbinsdale where they lived for more than 49 years and had 4 more kids along the way. They joined the parish of St. Austin in north Minneapolis. Ed remained a member of St. Austin's to the end of his life. In 1950, Ed was elected business agent for Sheet Metal Workers Local #34 and continued in that position for 30 years. He set up and served on the Sheet Metal Workers National Apprenticeship Committee, helped establish and run a national apprenticeship competition for 25 years, and performed many other duties for the Sheet Metal Workers International Association. He retired from active employment in 1980. In 2011, Ed was honored as a 70-year-member of the Dunwoody Century Club.

Ed was a longtime, active member of the Knights of Columbus, reaching the level of the 4th degree. He served as Grand Knight of the Minneapolis Local Council #435 from 1965 to 1966, and a subsequent term as District Deputy. Ed became an Oblate at St. John's University in 1945, and maintained this status until his death.

Ed and Julie were married for 55 years; Julie passed away in 1996 after several years of lingering illness.

Survived by sister, Eleanor Caputa; brother and sister-in-law, Louis R. (Bob) and Sophia; children, Ken (Gloria), Tom (Mary), Kathy (Bob Emerton), Teresa (Terry Wander), and Steve (Shimin Zhang); 7 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and special friend, Kessie Korzenowski.

Preceded in death by parents, Louis and Mary; and brother Henry.

Ed's family extends great thanks to all the staff at St. Therese Residence and Care Center for their care and concern for his well-being.

Interment Gethsemane Cemetery.

Memorials are preferred to the St. Therese Foundation. 

Funeral service is 11 a.m. March 1, 2013 at The Church of St. Austin, 4100 Thomas Ave North, Minneapolis. Visition one hour prior.
