The Final Campaign Weekend

This is an important election. You will be deciding what you want the city to look like and how you want the city to be run for the next two to four years and the decisions this council makes will shape Golden Valley for many years. During that time the new city council will be considering the light rail project, many new development projects and will begin the new Comprehensive Plan for the city.

My biggest concern for the city over this time is who will be making these decisions. Many outside groups are providing campaign and monetary support in order to have a say in how Golden Valley is run. The Met Council, Hennepin County, members of the state legislature, the major political parties and other special interest groups have all taken a great interest in this election. These groups do this because they want a Golden Valley city council that will support their initiatives. None of these groups, however, represent the full voice of the people of Golden Valley.

I have campaigned on a simple platform of basic ideas.

First, and most important, is to make sure the people of Golden Valley have the greatest say in what happens in the city. I realize we are not a single entity but part of a larger community and we must be able to work within that community. However the wants and needs of the citizens of Golden Valley must have the loudest voice and be the highest priority.

Second is to make sure we continue to support our public safety and infrastructure. A safe and secure community that functions well is a benefit for everyone and helps make Golden Valley a great place.

Finally, to make sure that we are looking at the viability of projects over the long term.

Several recent projects have been evaluated and even approved without knowing the full cost to the city or even if the groups proposing the project can cover their commitments and recent projects have began to unravel when outside financial sources have proven unable to meet their commitments. We need to be sure that the project that looks great today will continue to be beneficial years from now and that the city won’t be saddled with an expensive or obsolete entity.

Our resources are limited, be they financial, human or physical. Once we spend money or use land that resource is gone. Before using any of these resources I want to be sure that the citizens of Golden Valley will get the greatest benefit.

Over the last few weeks I have gotten the opportunity to meet with many of our residents. The questions and comments I have heard reinforce my belief that the people have the best idea on how they want their city to look, feel and function.  My only wish is that I had been able to meet more of you and hear more great ideas. Golden Valley is a great place to live, work, plan and raise a family. Vote for me next Tuesday, November 5 and we can work to keep it a great place.
