Golden Valley Library Staff Picks 2013 (Part Two)

After a busy day of helping our patrons research, use technology, apply for jobs, check out books, and more, many on our staff love to go home and unwind with a good book.  Here are our favorite books we read in 2013 (see part one of the article here).  Find and order these books through our website.

Title: Immortal Diamond

Author: Richard Rohr

Why I Liked It: Rohr is a Franciscan priest of the New Mexico province and a founder of The Center of Action and Contemplation. In this elegantly written book, he encourages everyone, especially secular seekers, to pierce the surface of the false identity (The ego) in order to touch the true essence which in this book he refers to as The immortal Diamond.

Title: Beyond Courage: the Untold Story of Jewish Resistance During the Holocaust

Author: Doreen Rappaport

Why It Spoke to Me: Some Jews didn't believe the rumors of Hitler's gas chambers. Others thought compliance would save their lives. It didn't. Still others fought with extreme courage and incredible ingenuity! This collection of stories reminds me, in whatever struggles I face, to think outside the box.

Title: The Land of Dreams

Author: Vidar Sundstol

This is the first book of a trilogy, written by Norwegian author Vidar Sundstol after he and his wife spent two years living on the north shore of Minnesota.  This first book was translated into English by Tiina Nunnally and published by the University of Minnesota Press.  It is a treat that the setting is so familiar.  The book has won many awards.  I am hopeful that the U of M Press will eventually publish the other two books in the trilogy.

Title: Far From the Tree: Parents, Children, and the Search for Identity

Author: Andrew Solomon

What It’s About:  An interesting and moving examination of parenting “exceptional” children.  In ten chapters, Solomon covers children marked by ten differences from their parents: deafness, dwarfism, autism, schizophrenia, multiple severe disabilities, prodigies, children conceived through rape, delinquent children, and transgender children. I was touched by the fierce and honest love conveyed by many of the parents interviewed for the book.

Title: Beautifully Unique Sparkleponies: On Myths, Morons, Free Speech, Football, and Assorted Absurdities

Author: Chris Kluwe

With a sharp wit and inventive (and often colorful) use of language, former Minnesota Vikings punter Chris Kluwe brings a well-honed talent for intelligent debate to a variety of issues, from child-rearing to video games to government and the debate on marriage equality. Often irreverent, but frequently poignant, I find his sense of humor while tackling complex issues really resonates with me.
