“1984” — Big Brother is Watching Physicist and Soviet threat analyst to lead seminar on 1949 book at Covenant Village of Golden Valley
Retired Honeywell physicist and Soviet threat analyst Louis Lavoie will lead a two-day seminar on George Orwell’s prescient masterpiece “1984.” Sponsored by Covenant Village of Golden Valley in cooperation with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, the seminar will be on two consecutive Tuesdays, Oct. 22 and 29, 10 to 11:30 a.m., at Covenant Village, 5800 St. Croix Ave. N., Golden Valley.
A writer on history, science and technology, Lavoie will lead the discussion of “1984” in the context of 21st century technology and social and political imperatives. Sales of Orwell’s 1949 dystopian novel spiked dramatically — as much as 9,000 percent on Amazon.com — with revelations of the extent of the National Security Agency’s data collection. Lavoie will explore the correlations between the book and today. He encourages attendees to read the book before attending the seminar, but that’s not required.
To facilitate discussion, attendance will be limited to 35. RSVP to (877) 415-6032 or www.RetireAtGoldenValley.com/rsvp.
