Winter Weather Advisory Remains in Effect

Difficult road conditions plague the entire metro.

According to the National Weather Service, a winter weather advisory remains in effect for the Twin Cities metro area until 6 p.m. tonight. Two to three inches of accumulation could still fall before we’re out of one of the snowiest winter storms in February on record.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation, driving conditions remain difficult. MNDoT reports state highways 55 and 12 continue to have blowing snow, snow drifts and packed or light snow. To get an up-to-the-minute look at your commute, click here.

Lieutenant Eric Roeske of the Minnesota State Patrol said the snow isn't keeping people home — he called this morning's commute "very busy."

“People need to take their time if they do travel,” said Kevin Gutknecht, MNDoT Communications Director.

According to Roeske, between 10 p.m. Sunday and 7:45 a.m. this morning, there were reports throughout the metro of 32 crashes, three of those with injuries, 92 spun-out or rolled-over vehicles, and two jackknifed semis.

Also, two State Patrol squad cars were in accidents — and one highway patrolmen was struck. Minnesota Public Radio reported that the patrolman was struck as tended to a stalled vehicle along Interstate 394. It was only through his last-second leap onto the vehicle's windshield, the report said, that he avoided worse injuries. The patrolman, MPR reported, drove himself to a hospital.

The City of Golden Valley continues to be under a snow emergency. Police remind residents all roads needs to be plowed curb to curb before they can be parked on.
