This Weekend in Golden Valley: Run the Valley

Hundreds of people will "Run the Valley" this Saturday.

More than 500 people have already signed up for Run the Valley this weekend. The 18th annual run/walk in Golden Valley is this Saturday and organizers say they are excited about the community event.

“Every year this event brings the community together for a good cause,” Golden Valley Staff Liaison Jeanne Fackler said. “We’re looking forward to another great year.”

The event is the largest fundraiser for the Golden Valley Human Services Foundation (GVHSF).

In 2011 GVHSF allocated more than $40,000 to nine different organizations that help meet the needs of less fortunate people in the Golden Valley area. In 2010, Run the Valley raised almost half of that, generating $20,000 for the organization.

While the event has become a staple in the community, this year the route has changed (see picture). Participants will start at Brookview Community Center instead of Meadowbrook Elementary, as they have done in previous years.

“We decided to re-reroute the course this year for safety reasons,” Fackler said. “The new course has fewer uncontrolled intersections for people to cross.”

There is still time to register for the event. Participants can sign up on the day of the race between 7:00-7:45 a.m. for $40.
