Thousands Expected To Attend Nearby Winter Festival

Families from Golden Valley will head north this Saturday to take part in Plymouth's annual Fire & Ice festival.

Plymouth Fire & Ice is set for this weekend. The 24th annual event has a host of fun winter activities happening at Parkers Lake Park.

“We look forward to this event each year,” Event Co-Coordinator Travis Karlen said. “It takes months of planning, but it’s one of the best attended events the city hosts.”

Karlen says the event takes six to eight months to plan and draws about 5,000 from the area.

“It takes a lot of work, a lot of planning and more than one hundred volunteers to pull this event off,” he said. “But it’s a unique event and we think the time and effort is well worth it.”

The event hosts a variety of kid-friendly activities, including a petting zoo, sled dog rides and an ice fishing competition. For the adults, there are hayrides and a goofy hat contest.

New this year is snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Kids and adults can try the sport for free.

“We wanted to try snowshoeing and cross country skiing last year, but there wasn’t enough snow," Karlen said. "This year we should be set.”

Aside from these new events, Karlen says a lot of people come for the concert and the fireworks. This year, Red Path is performing, which will be followed by fireworks at 6:30p.m.

“We’re excited for another great Fire & Ice,” Karlen said. “We hope everyone comes out to enjoy the day with us.”
