Super America's Request To Stay Open 24/7 Heads To City Council

On Monday the Planning Commission gave unanimous approval to the business' request to be open all day, every day.

is one step closer to staying open 24 hours a day.

On Monday, Golden Valley Planning Commission members approved Northern Tier Retail's request to be open all day, every day. The store currently is open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily.

The City Council will hold a public hearing on the issue Sept. 20 at , according to City Planner Joe Hogeboom.

The business' request for a variance has been on hold as Planning Commission members discussed some concerns. .

Owners said expanding the hours would better serve overnight shift workers at nearby Honeywell. City planners countered that workers could visit the store before or after their shifts and there’s another 24-hour gas outlet just a half-mile to the east, at Highway 100 and Duluth Road. Planners also are concerned about the potential impact to neighboring property values, along with certain aesthetic issues.

A similar request from Super America’s previous owners came in 1996, when the owners promised to canvas the neighborhood for their thoughts on noise, traffic and other concerns. Those conversations never happened, according to city planners.
