Plans for Farmer's Market in Golden Valley Moving Ahead

Mayor Linda Loomis says it could be in place by late June.

Starting this summer, Golden Valley City Hall could be the place to be on Sunday mornings.

Mayor Linda Loomis says it's likely that just outside the building, in the parking lot under the water tower, a new farmer's market will bring neighbors together in search of locally-grown produce and live entertainment.

Loomis talked about plans for a farmer's market at Tuesday night's city council meeting.

"We already have a letter from a council member in New Hope who put his stamp of approval on it," she said.

The same non-profit group working to set up the market in Golden Valley already set one up in New Hope.  The two will not be scheduled at the same time.  Golden Valley's is tentatively set for Sunday mornings at 10 a.m.

The goal is to have 50 percent of all booths feature produce, and Loomis says local musicians and guests like master gardeners will be invited to participate.

"I think it sounds great," said Councilman Mike Freiberg.  "It sounds like something we could use."

The council wanted a price tag on the farmer's market, but Loomis assured the city that it shouldn't cost anything.

"Vendors should be good about cleaning up after themselves, so they would only need the parking lot from us," she said.  "We wouldn't have to worry about staffing needs or providing tables or anything."

The city council overwhelmingly supports the farmer's market, but did not officially vote on any measures.  Loomis says she expects the council to take up the issue formally in upcoming meetings and hopes the market will be in place in Golden Valley by the end of June.
