Recycling Holiday Decorations

There are many easy ways to recycle holiday decorations, including Christmas trees and holiday lights.

As 2011 comes to an end, it’s time to clear out the holiday decorations and dry pine tree and get ready for a new year. For those looking to recycle old holiday lights and toss the tree, Golden Valley Patch has put together a list of helpful resources to help de-holiday your house.

Whether you’ve switched to LED lights, or just have a tangled mess of old, broken holiday lights, there is a way to recycle unwanted lights. The Recycling Association of Minnesota has set up several drop-off sites around the state to recycle old strings of lights. Drop-off sites in Golden Valley include: General Mills, Kupier’s ACE Hardware, Meadowbrook Elementary and Tennant Company. Collection sites will take lights through January.

Christmas Tree

The best way to get rid of the Christmas tree is to call your garbage hauler. Most companies will accept trees on certain days after the holiday season for a small fee. You can find the phone number of your garbage hauler here.

Clothes and Household Items

If the New Year has inspired an overhaul of your home, there are several ways to donate the extra stuff that has collected in closets and cupboards. Hennepin County has an online resource that lists organizations that will take certain items.  The Reuse Directory can help homeowners find new homes from anything from clothing to household goods.
