Readers React to Rolling Stone Cover of Accused Boston Bomber

Are you boycotting the latest issue of Rolling Stone?

By now, you’ve seen the cover. The July edition of Rolling Stone sports a self portrait of the accused Boston bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev.

By now, you’ve seen the local reaction. Drug stores, like Golden Valley's CVS and Walgreens, say they will not carry the magazine, in a protest of sorts.

But we want to know: Will you, personally, protest the racey editorial decision? A Nashua Patch blogger said that he intends to boycott the “advertisers of Rolling Stone magazine.”

On Wednesday, we asked Golden Valley residents what they thought about the magazine cover. Golden Valley Patch Facebook friends said the following:

  • Dale Urevig: um, this is not censorship.
censorship is only done by the government & media.
this is an example of freedom or Self-censorship by CVS & Walgreens in the same manner they do not carry Hustler / Penthouse etc. & occasionally put a blank cover over GQ or Vanity Fair. sure this goes a step further with the actual removal but that is CVS & Walgreens right.
  • Jan McClary Serumgard: And if they did carry Hustler or Penthouse you'd see the same folks now claiming censorship, protesting outside their door demanding they remove them from the store. It actually happened back in the 80's.
  • Jan McClary Serumgard: btw...I'm very glad Walgreens and CVS have the sense and guts to make those decisions.
  • Robin Scholer: I agree with the editor of RS. The photo illustrates that this is someone who looked and acted just like any of our kids, and then became a monster. How did that happen? The story covers that.

Do you have an opinion about the cover? Will you stop buying the magazine? Will you stop going to the stores that sell it?
