The policy the nonprofit instituted in January has led to a 41 percent reduction in the rate of euthanasia.

Six months ago, the started requiring appointments for anyone who wanted to drop off an animal.

That move reduced the rate of euthanasia by 41 percent, according to the nonprofit's president.

The Animal Humane Society has offices in Golden Valley, Buffalo, Coon Rapids, St. Paul and Woodbury.

“It’s been almost unbelievable how quickly changing the way animals come to us has made a difference for the animals,” said Janelle Dixon, president and CEO, in a news release. “We were confident the improvements would make a difference, but not this big or this fast. It leaves us with great hope for the future as we’re able to build off this success and continue to do more and more for animals.”

, Chief Operating Officer Ray Aboyan said the appointment model is based on programs across the country, including in Portland, OR; San Diego, and Eerie County, NY.

The Animal Humane Society also reported Tuesday that placement rates have increased from 67 percent last year to 81 percent now, and some pets are staying with their owners.

"Animal Humane Society has been able to help hundreds of families resolve the issues they’re facing with their pets to keep the pets in the home," said spokeswoman Carrie Libera in the news release.

Since owners have to schedule appointments to drop off their pets, the shelter has been able to gather more information about the animals' medical histories and their personalities. Sometimes that has led to animals being adopted out the same day they came in, according to Libera.
