Daytripper: Lark Toys and Eagles

At the end two-hour drive from the Twin Cities, you can view the national bird up close.

KELLOGG—What kid doesn’t love toys and wildlife?

A great place to take kids, especially that of grade-school age and younger, is Lark Toys in Kellogg and the National Eagle Center in Wabasha. Located along the Mississippi River between Red Wing and Winona, it is a trip of less than two hours from the Twin Cities.

Lark Toys has toys galore, including a number of hand-carved wooden and collectibles. It also has a carousel, bookstore, miniature golf and a fudge store.

The National Eagle Center in nearby Wabasha is devoted to conservation, research and education. The center is home to several eagles that are tethered, and thus can be observed close up by visitors. All the eagles live in a modern 14,000-square-foot interpretative center permanently; they cannot fly because of previous injuries.

You can even have your picture taken with an eagle.
