Antique Education

It wasn't the Antiques Roadshow, but members of The Golden Valley Historical Society were able to get an antique education from two experts in the appraisal business Thursday  night. The society hosted acclaimed antique appraisers Bonnie Lindberg and Jim Marrinan from Appraisal Specialists Midwest to give members the basics in antique collection, value and sales.

“We are not dealers or auctioneers, appraising is our only business,” said Lindberg.

Lindberg has appeared on the Home & Garden Show “Collectable Treasures” and on . Mr. Marrinan has appeared on the PBS program “Antiques Roadshow” and the Home & Garden show “Collectable Treasures”.

Both expert taught members how to collect antiques, educated them on what the most popular collectible antiques are, how to determine an antique's value and how to sell an antique.

But they warn, it takes many years to become a real specialist in this type of work. So, ff that dust-filled statue has had you questioning its value, Marrinan says you should take it to an expert.

“You're often better off taking a potentially valuable item to a specialist to get an expert opinion on worth and value,” said Marrinan.  

The Golden Valley Historical Society is planning on hosting its ninth annual version of Antiques Roadshow later this month.

If you're interested in having any items appraised, the event will be held Saturday, February 26 from 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.  

Attendees may bring up to five items for professional appraisal to , 7600 Golden Valley Road, starting at 1:00 pm. A $5.00 donation (per item) will be collected and given to the Historical Society building restoration fund.
