The League of Women Voters celebrates Women's History Month

March is Women’s History Month and the League of Women Voters Golden Valley is sharing some of our history to recognize the positive contributions the organization has made to our community.

In January of 1946 a small group of women met to organize a League group in Golden Valley.  After two years as a provisional League they were recognized officially as a member of the League of Women Voters United States in January of 1948.

Over these many years the League of Women Voters Golden Valley has been active in studying issues, educating the community and serving Golden Valley as advisory commission members and as elected officials.  The first woman elected official was Council Member Pat Moberg, elected in 1972 and served 1973-1975.  Rosemary Thorsen was the first woman Mayor who was elected in 1979 and served 1980-1983.  They were both members of the League.

In 1974 the National League voted to allow male members.  Since that time four of our Mayors and ten Council Members have been League members.

In 1972, the League of Women Voters Golden Valley was recognized by the local newspaper as the “Citizen of the Year”.  The paper stated:  “This is the first time a group of citizens has been honored for its continuing and zealous support of principles and goals that ultimately improve the climate and image of Golden Valley”.

The League of Women Voters Golden Valley continues to study issues, sponsor candidates forums and involve citizens in government in a positive way.  The League is currently working with the Minnesota Humanities Commission, the Golden Valley Human Rights Commission and the local branch of the Hennepin County Library to sponsor a series of forums on the United States Constitution.  There will be much more information on this project in the near future.

We celebrate Women’s History Month and the role women have played in the community of Golden Valley.  We invite all to participate by joining the League as members and attending our various meetings and events.  Informed, respectful citizens are the foundation of a thriving, positive community.
