Recycling/Garbage/Yard Waste:  I will support researching alternatives to handling our waste in Golden Valley.

Golden Valley offers curbside recycling pick-up for residents.  There is no incentive for businesses to recycle.  Businesses are on their own to contract a hauler for recyclables.  As a result, a lot of recyclable material may be ending up in the garbage. I would like to investigate whether we can provide more encouragement for businesses to recycle. As an example we could promote the current Hennepin County grant program to help encourage business to recycle.  You can find out more about that here: Waste Reduction

Municipal-contracted garbage hauling:  Many of our newly- surfaced City streets are seeing a large amount of truck traffic on them created from 5 to 6 different garbage haulers collecting trash several days a week.  By contracting with one garbage hauler, our streets would see a reduction of large truck traffic on our streets.  The City may also be able to negotiate a better rate for garbage pickup by negotiating a larger bulk pick-up contract with a hauler.  I am finding while knocking on doors that residents are equally divided on this subject; there are great arguments by some to keep the hauler they like now, and that putting bids out for a city wide hauler may squeeze the local small business owner out.  I would like to examine the pros and cons of making a change and allow a forum for residents to weigh in on the idea.

I would like to investigate making available the Maple Grove yard waste facility to Golden Valley residents with no drop-off charge.  Currently 8 other cities in the northwest suburbs take advantage of the drop-off site with no site drop cost to residents. This drop off site is available from April 1st to November 30th each year. This would give Golden Valley residents an additional alternative to our current Spring pickup and Fall leaf drop-off program. http://www.mgyardwaste.com/

I will also investigate the possibility of a curbside compost pick-up program. Several cities in the metro area currently participate in this program and you can find out more about it here: Organics Recycling

I am not in favor of changing the current garbage and recycling container placement ordinance. 10.40 subd5
