10 days until election day: Bikeways and Walkways

10 Days until election day, issue of the day; Bikeways and Walkways. You can find out more about my ideas on the issues of interest to Golden Valley Residents on my website: https://andysnope.com/issues/

I will work with others to increase access and safety for bicycle riders and pedestrians in Golden Valley.  This will provide better connectivity for our parks, open spaces and neighborhoods.  It will help us build a stronger community.

A couple years ago the Luce Line trail connection was completed through Golden Valley.  This project completed a commuter and recreational biking trail that is very well used today. I would like to explore increasing more trail and on-street bicycle options in Golden Valley. The Luce Line connects our City with an East-West corridor, but we do not have many options to connect on North-South routes. We also do not have enough options for bicycles and pedestrians to cross the great divide of MN Highway 55. I would advocate creating North-South corridors and working with MNDOT to help create safe crossings over or under MN Highway 55.

The most striking example of where I see the need for improving pedestrian traffic is along Golden Valley Road between the Courage Center and Byerly’s. The sidewalk is not in good shape; it is uneven and sometimes narrow and, in the winter, almost impassable. The people I see struggle the most are people who are less abled and use a wheeled vehicle or walking assistance. I would like to see Golden Valley work with Hennepin County to make this area, and other difficult areas in Golden Valley, more accessible for pedestrians. A good opportunity to coordinate this project would be during the planning stages of the Bottineau Transitway corridor restructuring.
