Chilly weather didn't stop the 50-some volunteers that helped plant during the City of Golden Valley's Lilac Planting Project on Saturday afternoon. After planting, volunteers enjoyed a lunch courtesy of the Golden Valley Garden Club.

On Saturday, Sept. 22, the City of Golden Valley partnered with the Minnesota Department of Transportation to beautify the roadways near Highways 55 and 169. Through the Golden Valley Lilac Planting Project, volunteers helped plant lilacs, day lilies, trees and perennials.

Did you help plant lilacs yesterday? How did it go? Tell us in the comments!

This was the fifth annual Lilac Planting Project event that is a prime example of how a small spark from an individual's [Dr. Dwight Townes] idea of volunteer community beautification grew to a well established tradition. All volunteers each year are bona fide BridgeBuilders who are in fact creating connections for the people who live and work in Golden Valley. The real reward is seeing the fruits of the labor along Highway 55 from Highway 169 east to Douglas Drive. Thanks first goes to the volunteers and to the contributors [including Byerlys, Caribou Coffee at Byerlys, and to General Mills], the Minnesota Department of Transportation, and to the City Council of Golden Valley who created and supports the Envision Connection Project.

My friends and I decided to volunteer this year, and we are so glad we did! Met some wonderful people, got some exercise and did something good for the city we love. We'll be back again next year for sure!

I wanna be part of this. When we moved to Minneapolis-St Paul for school in 1992, I learned of the bottle nose and Lilac Way, then the Botany teacher's Theo Wirth Wildflower garden and the Golden Valley garden club. This would be a dream come true. Please add me to the list and let me know the 2013 date planned. Kate at kthisriv@gmail.com
