Robbinsdale Students Hope for Checkmate

Elementary students from Sonnesyn Elementary move on to the state chess competition.

The following content was provided by the Robbinsdale School District:

The Mighty Kings of Sonnesyn Elementary School in New Hope capped an undefeated season by winning their first district chess championship.

The team, coached by Mike Klein and his assistants, went 6-0 this season. Each year, the Robbinsdale Area elementary schools which have an active chess club play one another in a round robin format, fielding teams of 10 and visiting each others’ schools to play a match. This is the first league championship achieved at Sonnesyn since Klein began coaching the team twelve years ago.

The State Chess Championship tournament will be held on April 21 and 22nd at Breck School in Golden Valley. At least a dozen Robbinsdale Area Schools students will be competing in that tournament, and they are ready for it after what has been a strong year of tournament for the district.
