District 281 Mom Makes Box Tops Go Big for Local School
Find out how parents in one local school are working to raise thousands of dollars by clipping Box Tops.
In an effort to volunteer for District 281, in 2008, Crystal resident Jodi Massman agreed to help clip Box Tops with another parent.
Today, five years later, Massman is the box top coordinator for Robbinsdale Spanish Immersion School in New Hope, and says that her school raises between $2,500 and $5,000 each year just from clipping box tops.
“It was amazing to see how much money the school could make with the parents doing a little bit of work,” Massman said, recalling the first time she started working with parents to collect tops.
With a child at Plymouth Middle School, and two children attending Robbinsdale Spanish Immersion, you could say Massman is a power parent. In addition to her box top duties, Massman is a member of the PTO and works on the district’s community education advisory council.
“Volunteering in the schools has always been important to me,” Massman said. “And collecting Box Tops is such an easy thing to do.”
Massman estimates that she spends about 40 hours each year gathering Box Tops from Robbinsdale Middle School, coordinating school contests and counting tops. According to Massman, the money that comes from box tops is actually used to hire teaching assistants.
“We have about 175 people that are currently registered,” Massman said, “all of our fundraising goes toward hiring teaching assistants.”
In a recent press release, Box Tops for Education announced that they have given more than $525 million to schools across the country.
"We couldn’t be prouder to have reached such a significant milestone, but we couldn’t have reached $525 million without the passionate coordinators that help collect Box Tops,” Mark Addicks, chief marketing officer at General Mills, said in the release. "Through their amazing efforts, we’ve been able to help fund school programs that would have been lost if it weren’t for the Box Tops program.”
