Robbinsdale Cooper Sophomore Earns State Honors for Service
Corey Loken, a sophomore in the International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme (IBMYP) at Cooper High School has been named one of six runners-up in the 18th Annual 2013 Prudential Spirit of Community Awards in Minnesota and has received a Distinguished Finalist medal to commemorate this prestigious award. The Prudential Spirit of Community Awards is a nationwide program honoring youth for their tremendous acts of volunteerism.
Corey was nominated for this award for his efforts to help KidPack, a program which provides weekend snacks to students in elementary schools who often don't have enough to eat over the weekend. Corey coordinated a tennis tournament called "Serving Up Weekend Snacks" that raised over $15,000 to provide 7,200 weekend snack packages. He raised the funds through tournament participation, sponsorships and grants.
Based on the number of volunteer hours indicated on Corey's application, he has also qualified for the President's Volunteer Service Award. This award recognizes Americans of all ages who have volunteered significant amounts of their time to serve their communities.
